Why do we love Beaufort and promote it every chance we get?
Why?
Good question, easy answer:
Across these United States, we have a problem with scale.
Things are often just too big.
Many of our vacation, resort, and tourism spots now have one thing in common – big chains, big franchises, and big mass-produced pop culture. These things are familiar, but the scale is off. As people, we can only be in one place at a time, doing one thing at a time, within a human-sized space. [Read more…]
The spring of 2013 will go down across the South as a strange one weather-wise, don’t you think?
The rain and the cool temperatures have limited everyone’s outdoor activities. On a recent trip to Beaufort though, the weather on Shackleford Banks turned particularly nice. We were able to take advantage of it, and we were fortunate enough to be visited by a few of the famous horses of Shackleford Banks.
After a rainy Saturday, and a big sunny Sunday morning breakfast at the Boardwalk Cafe, we decided to take a trip over to Shackelford Banks with Island Ferry Adventures. We’ve been planning a substaintive post on Shackleford, but this trip was so much fun, we thought we’d go ahead and write about it now and show you a few photos from the trip. [Read more…]

Beaufort is a pedestrian-friendly town.
Beaufort is probably one of the most pedestrian-friendly towns anywhere in the state of North Carolina.
If you are visiting and staying in Beaufort, you can drive into town, park, and never get back into the car until you have to leave. Everything you need to enjoy your visit is available via a short walk.
Walking will slow you down, lower your stress, and help you get back in touch with leisure.
The ability to park and never get back in the car for an entire trip was one of the things that made Beaufort a perfect spot for us to relax. Staying out of the car and out of Carteret County tourist traffic (which can get sticky at times, especially during the summer) will make your trip to the area significantly more relaxing!
While you can just set off strolling in Beaufort and be perfectly fine, having some direction can help you see the best of Beaufort in short order.
That’s why we are beginning a series – Walking Around Beaufort. We’ll be detailing the best routes to walk and enjoy all Beaufort has to offer. This is our first Walking Around Beaufort route. Use it as a guide for a leisurely stroll or a route for a run, or just enjoy the photos.
Old Salt (Facebook) is one of Beaufort’s newest restaurants. It opened in 2012 in the space that was once a Beaufort classic, the Net House, at 133 Turner Street.
I ate at the Net House with a group of friends on a Saturday night in late May 1989. We were all somewhere between 18 and 24 years old. We were all fit. We were all tan. We had the perfect mix of boys and girls.
We spent the day on the beach. I can’t seem to recall which beach exactly, though I do seem to remember a boat ride. So, it must have been at Shackleford Banks.
Needless to say, we had had several beers that afternoon.
We were staying at a friend’s house in Morehead City, but we all were Beaufort fans and decided to take several cabs into Beaufort for supper.
The Net House was not exactly fine dining, but the fried seafood was great, the domestic drafts were cold, it was familiar and comfortable. That Saturday night in 1989 we got a table for 10. It was easy.
For years, the Net House served a stuffed soft shell crab entrée that was my favorite.
For a very long time, Beaufort’s waterfront area was lacking a convenience store or some other outlet for basic supplies at a decent price. I can remember more than once in years past having to drive…
or more likely than not, walk…
walk very slowly…
First, a disclaimer…this is another from-the-heart review. We have not received any compensation from the Inlet Inn.
As we have said before, staying in downtown Beaufort will lower your stress by limiting your accommodation choices. If you are staying in the historic district of Beaufort you can rent a house or condo, you can stay in a Bed & Breakfast, you can choose the Beaufort Inn, or you can stay at the Inlet Inn.
Our current favorite is the Inlet Inn. It has become our home away from home in Beaufort.
This review will give you four reasons why.
In our last fishing post, we detailed three easy steps to get started fishing around Beaufort. In this post, we will give you three great spots around Beaufort to enjoy fishing.
We’re assuming that you are relatively new to fishing, don’t have access to a boat, and aren’t interested in spending money on a charter right now.
Visitors to Beaufort may well be very familiar with the nautical flagpole along the waterfront near the live oaks just next to the Dockhouse.
You know the one, filled with colorful flags.
It looks great with a strong wind from the south and has eight flags (in addition to the national, state, and town flags).
